Freshman Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) led a balanced scoring attack for the Purple Knights with 15 points in her collegiate debut. Junior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) also scored 15 points for Saint Michael's, making 5-of-8 3-pointers, while seniors Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) and Mandy Scott (Vergennes, Vt./Vergennes Union) tallied 14 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) added career-high totals of nine points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals as six Purple Knights scored at least eight points in the win.
For UMass Lowell (0-3, 0-1 NE-10), Bianca Simmons netted a game-high 19 points, making 11-of-14 free throws. Brianna Wilson contributed 13 points, while Sha'Nay Bushner notched 11 points and nine rebounds.
The River Hawks held their only lead at 8-6 with 12:19 left in the first half, but a 3-pointer from senior Meghan McCormack (Barrie, Ont./Saint Peter's Secondary School) just nine seconds later gave the Purple Knights the lead for good, and triggered a 9-0 run. Saint Michael's stretched its lead to 12 points later in the first half, but a 10-0 UMass Lowell run pulled the River Hawks to within 31-27 at halftime.
The Purple Knights appeared to pull away early in the second half, as Saint Michael's again opened up a double-digit lead. UMass Lowell made one last rally, trimming its deficit to 52-48 with 10:49 left, but a Quinn trifecta sparked a 14-2 Saint Michael's run, giving the visitors a 66-50 advantage, and the Purple Knights led by at least 12 points the rest of the way.
Saint Michael's finished 12-of-25 from beyond the arc, with five Purple Knights making at least one 3-pointer. Saint Michael's also held a 41-31 rebounding edge against UMass Lowell, who is coached by Saint Michael's Hall of Famer Kathy O'Neil '81.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at 14th-ranked Franklin Pierce University.
