Mascoli Qualifies for NCAA Cross Country Championships with Fourth-Place Run at Atlantic Regional

CARY, N.C. – East Stroudsburg University sophomore Rose Mascoli turned in a remarkable performance at Saturday’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, placing fourth and advancing to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, December 4 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mascoli, 12th at the PSAC Championships on Nov. 6, ran a time of 21:54.3 on the 6K course at WakeMed Soccer Park to become the first ESU women’s runner to earn a spot in the NCAA field since Vanessa Andes in 2004. She finished 19 seconds ahead of Shippensburg’s Mary Dell, the fifth-place finisher in the regional and an All-American last fall.

Shippensburg’s Neely Spence won the women’s title in 20:46.7, finishing 52 seconds ahead of Elicia Anderson (Millersville). Jennifer Harpp (Slippery Rock) was third, followed by Mascoli, Dell, Abigail Huber (Shippensburg) and Tina Yi (Edinboro).

ESU’s men’s team was fifth and the women were sixth, repeating their spots from the PSAC Championships. Sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald was 23rd for the women to claim All-Region honors after finishing 20th for the final All-PSAC spot two weeks ago. Senior Jonna Trexler (50th), sophomore Bridget McCarron (60th) and freshman Kim Wernerspach (62nd) rounded out the Warriors’ scorers.

On the men’s side, ESU’s top five runners had a spread of just 37 seconds as the Warriors finished in the top five for the second straight year and the third time in the last five seasons.

Junior Greg Laraia was 32nd in 33:25.3, followed by sophomore Amr Aldeen (35th), sophomore Mike Pereira (41st), senior Chris Zadroga (43rd) and sophomore Jim Romano (34:02.8).
