Javelinas Go 0-2 at St. Mary’s Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team started the 2010-11 season with a pair of losses at the St. Mary’s University Tournament played at Bill Greehey Arena.  They lost on Saturday to Central Missouri, 77-50 and on Sunday to St. Mary’s, 63-46.

            The Javelinas (0-2) shot only 28.4 percent from the field against Central Missouri while committing 27 turnovers.  Senior Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action.  Freshman Ashley Perez (Lytle/Lytle HS) added eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

            Central Missouri had four players scored in double figures.  They shot 49.2 percent from the field and connected on 10-of-21 from three-point range.  Rebecca Roberts led the team with 14 points while Erin Redmond came off the bench to dish out seven assists.

            On Sunday, St. Mary’s jumped out to a 24-8 lead and never looked back.  The lead ballooned to as many as 24 points in the second half.

            The Javelinas had a pair of players score in double figures.  Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) led the team with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks while going 6-for-6 from the foul line.  Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) added 13 points and four assists for the team while Ikeni led the team with eight rebounds.

            The Rattlers and Javelinas each shot 37 percent from the field, but the Rattlers attempted six more shots and score nine more points from the foul line.  Liz Boyd led the team with 17 points off the bench while Kristen Williams added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

            The Javelinas are back in action on November 22 at UT-Pan American.
