Grizzlies blow by Eagles, 82-47, in home opener

Adams State shoots 58.3 percent in Friday night's 35-point victory

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Playing in front of a home crowd at Plachy Hall for the first time this season as part of the 2010 Adams State Bankers Classic, the Adams State College Grizzly women's basketball team overpowered visiting Northern New Mexico, as the Grizzly bench scored 47 points and freshman Briana Benjamin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) put up a career and team season-high 17 points in the victory

The win bumps the Grizzlies to 2-1 on the season while dropping the Eagles to 0-6. The Grizzlies, who posted an impressive 11-3 record at Plachy Hall last season, continued to look strong on their home court with season-highs in field goals, 3-point field goals, shooting percentage, points, assists and steals.

Just 10 seconds into the game, sophomore Jamonica Hudgins (Las Cruces, N.M.) gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. After senior Kendra Coveal (Albuquerque, N.M.) added a free throw to make the score 3-0, the Eagles found the board on a layup by Amberly Trujillo, but the score would never get any closer. The Grizzlies answered back with a 16-0 run, and by the midway point of the first half held a 25-7 advantage over Northern New Mexico.

By the time the break arrived, the Grizzlies were the owners of a comfortable 47-25 lead, having shot 57.6 percent (19-33) over the initial 20 minutes of action. For the game, the Grizzlies shot 58.3 percent (35-60), which equals the fourth best single-game percentage in the available Grizzlies'single-game history (1997-98/Present). Likewise, the team's 35 field goals made also ties for fourth-best mark in a single-game.

Coveal, who would only play for one minute of the second half, chipped in for 10 of those points, hitting all four of her shots from the field and going 2-for-3 from the free throw line, as all five ASC starters scored at least four.

But the second half belonged to Benjamin, who scored 14 of her 17 points after coming out of the locker room. The junior hit 6 of 7 second half shots, including a pair of 3-point buckets, and added four more assists to end the night with a game-high six.

No Adams State starter played more than 20 minutes in the contest, as the Grizzly bench was on the court for the majority of the second half. The starting five was afforded the chance to rest up for the Grizzlies second game of the weekend on Saturday night.

Senior Crystal Loch (Alamosa, Colo.) also put up some impressive numbers off the bench, but did most of her damage in the first half. Loch ended the day with a season-high 13 points, nine of which she put up in the first half. She also accounted for the jumper that gave the Grizzlies a 39-point lead, their largest of the night, with 5:18 left in the game.

Loch grabbed three steals as well, and as a team ASC recorded 17 takeaways, equalling the sixth-best single-game mark for the Grizzlies.

Hudgins was the fourth Grizzly to put double-digit points, hitting 4 of 5 from the field, including a triple, and hitting while finishing her night early with 10 points.

Sophomore forward Deanna Reich (Mesa, Ariz.), who did not even enter the contest until the second half, still managed to drop eight points and grab four boards.

Senior guard Vera Jo Bustos (Las Vegas, N.M.) played just 19 minutes in the blowout effort, but put herself in every column of the box score with six points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocks, the most swats by a Grizzly this season.

The Grizzlies will play their final game of the 2010 Adams State Bankers Classic on Saturday, facing Cameron (Okla.) University at 6 p.m. The Aggies played right before the Grizzlies on Friday, facing the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's (RMAC) Western State, falling in overtime by a final score of 73-66.
