GRIFFON WOMEN COME UP JUST SHORT AGAINST UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI, 67-60

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Missouri Western women’s basketball team played extremely well falling 67-60 against the University of Missouri in Mizzou Arena. Western shot 40-percent (10-25) from beyond the arc with Lauren Nolke scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from long range.

Western played well in the first half holding the lead for most of the frame. Western scored the first basket on a lay-up by Kallie Schoonover. The two teams went back and forth for the first 12:02 of the half playing to a tie at 18.

From there the Griffons went on a 7-0 run taking a 25-18 lead after a Nolke long range shot, a Jessica Koch jumper and two Schoonover free throws. Western held that lead until the under four media timeout with 3:51 to play in the half.

The Griffons got out scored by one the rest of the half but still held a six point lead (32-26) heading into the break. Western made 8-of-10 free throw attempts in the half and 4-of-12 long range shots. Koch led the charge with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Missouri made just 10-of-39 shot and went 1-for-16 from long range. The Tigers out rebounded the Griffons on the offensive end of the floor by six at 13-7 and had 16 points in the paint to six for Western. Christine Flores had 11 points and three rebounds in the frame.

The Tigers came out of the locker room determined as they tied the score at 37 with 14:52 to play after Flores made a lay-up off an assist from RaeShara Brown. The two teams played even basketball up to 42 then the Tigers went on a 5-0 run taking the 47-42 lead after a fast break lay-up by Brown.

The Griffons battled back and took a 54-53 lead on a Koch jumper with 8:04 to play. The Griffons offense went cold the rest of the way scoring just six points to the Tigers 14 falling by seven to the bigger Tiger team.

Koch finished the night with a double-double scoring 15 points and snaring 10 rebounds. She made 6-of-11 field goal attempts and 2-of-2 free throws.

Schoonover finished with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting which included 2-for-2 from long range. Brenna Saline led the charge on the boards collecting 12 rebounds.

As a team the Griffons finished making 21-of-64 (32.8%) field goal attempts and 8-of-10 (80.0%) free throw attempts. The Griffons had 29 turnovers to the Tigers 23 and got outscored 34 to 10 in the paint. The Tigers also had 24 offensive rebounds to the Griffons 13.

The Tigers were led by Flores as she dumped in 25 points making 10-of-19 field goals. Brown finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Missouri made 25-of-73 (34.2%) field goals and 12-of-21 (57.1%) from the free throw line. The Tigers struggled from long range making just 5-of-30 (16.7%) attempts.

Western will take on Benedictine in an exhibition game on Saturday, November 6 at 7:00 pm in the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons will open the 2010-11 regular season on Friday, November 19 when they take on Northern Michigan University in the Quincy Tournament. Tip time is set for 5:00 pm from Quincy, Ill.
