Griffins Take Warrior to the Wire in Women’s Volleyball

Philadelphia, PA - (11/2/10) – Neither team was willing to give an inch as this evening’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) went to a deciding fifth game. Nyack College won the opening set in a tight 27-25 battle and the rest of the match would follow in similar fashion with the Warrior claiming a narrow 3-2 (27-25, 25-27, 25-23, 18-25, 15-6) win over Chestnut Hill College.

The score never separated by more than four points in the opening set and five kills apiece from sophomore right side Madelynn Ries (Antananarivo, Madagascar) and freshman outside hitter Kailey Arlen (Orland Park, IL) helped Chestnut Hill College (4-24, 1-16) to a slight 24-22 advantage. Unfortunately, the Griffins were not able to record the game-point as Nyack College (7-12, 7-10) went on a 5-1 run to win the set 27-25. The Griffins turned the tables in the second set, 27-25, combining for four team blocks and holding the Warriors to and a .048 (12K-10E-42TA) hitting percentage. The third set went the Warriors way, 25-23, thanks to seven kills from junior outside hitter Moana Masoniai (Waipu, HI), but in the fourth set the Griffin defense awoke once again for three more team blocks and a 25-18 win. The Warriors won the coin flip for the opening serve of the deciding set and quickly built a 10-5 lead before claiming the match 3-2 with a 15-6 win in the frame.

Masoniai led Nyack College with 30 kills and a .309 (30K-9E-68TA) hitting percentage while freshman setter Brianna Kane (Bethany, CT) was the engine for the Warriors with 47 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Tawnie Savage (Yuba City, CA) chipped in with 15 kills in addition to making 20 digs on defense.  Kane also helped defensively with 19 digs and four blocks, but it was sophomore libero Michelle Makela (Cocoa, FL) who anchored the Warrior defense with 35 digs.

Ries led the Chestnut Hill College offense with 13 kills while Arlen and Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) were factors on both sides of the net. Arlen added 13 digs to her 11-kill night while Benson finished with eight kills and seven blocks. Setters, sophomore Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, DE) and freshman Allison Eberly (Orwigsburg, PA) combined for 39 assists and six aces. Sophomore libero Elisabeth DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) hustled to 31 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Bobbie Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA) supported her with 17 digs of her own.

The women’s volleyball team will complete their final CACC homestand of the season with a 7:00 p.m. match against Felician College on Thursday, November 4.
