Griffins Send Firebirds Down In Flames For Second Win

Philadelphia, PA – (11/17/2010) – After leading 34-29 at halftime, Chestnut Hill College slowly allowed their lead to slip before rallying to a 62-59 victory over the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The Firebirds surrendered the lead in the final six minutes with sophomore guard Marqesah Spicer (Philadelphia, PA) sparking the Griffins on their closing run.

The sharp shooting of senior guard Jessica Pruiti (Old Bridge, NJ) drove Chestnut Hill College (2-0) in the opening half. She drained 4-of-5 (80.0%) from long range and added layup to total 14 points by intermission. Sophomore forward Lindsay Alexander (Huntingdon Valley, PA) chipped in with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals to help facilitate the Griffins 34-29 halftime lead. Following the break, junior forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, South Carolina) and junior guard Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL) led UDC to a nine-point lead, 45-36, with 13:35 still to play. After a home timeout, the Griffins began to whittle away at the Firebird advantage. A three-point basket from junior guard Kamia Smith (Wyncote, PA) gave the Griffins the lead back at 5:31, 54-52, and in the final minutes Spicer dazzled the crowd and confused the Firebirds directing the Griffins to their second straight, season-opening win.

McGill and Bonner each finished with 12 points, but junior guard Kendra Johnson (Mt. Laurel, NJ) led UDC (1-1) with 17 points. McGill accounted for over half of the Firebirds rebounds, grabbing 21 in the contest while also recording a block and two steals, defensively. Bonner also made a block and two steals while graduate guard Niqky Hughes (Fort Worth, TX) totaled two blocks and two steals in addition to her ten points.

Pruiti scored only one, second-half point, but she still let the Griffins with 15 points. Alexander totaled 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals while Spicer finished with nine points and three steals. Junior forward Ebony Washington (Philadelphia, PA) led the Griffins on the glass with 13 rebounds.

The women’s basketball team travels to Bloomsburg University for their next contest, which is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, November 20.
