Zias Win in Quick Fashion at Southwestern Oklahoma State

WEATHERFORD, OKLA. — Junior midfielder Danielle Thurman (Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte HS) wasted little time giving the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (5-12; LSC 2-8) the lead, scoring 18 seconds into Friday’s Lone Star Conference match against Southwestern Oklahoma State (7-9-1; LSC 3-6-1). The Zias went on to a 2-0 victory at the SWOSU Soccer Field.

Sierra Cardenas (Jr., GK, Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) made five saves to registered the ninth shutout of her career, after setting the ENMU career record against East Central last week. The victory was the second for Eastern in its last three matches, with the lone loss during that stretch coming in overtime.

Thurman’s goal came off a pass from Christie Nylaan (Sr., D, Keller, Texas/Keller HS) and was the earliest goal in Zia history, eclipsing a goal from all-time points leader, 28 seconds into a 2-1 home victory against Dixie State, on September 26, 2006. The shot was the only that Eastern would take in the half, as the Bulldogs held a 5-1 lead in total shots, with Cardenas stopping both of Southwestern Oklahoma’s scoring chances.

Eastern also struck early in the second half, with Gerilyn Armijo (Fr., M, Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces HS) netting the second goal of her career after taking a pass from Brook Serrano (So., F, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS).

The Bulldogs played strong defense throughout the match and held a 10-2 edge in total shots, but Eastern managed to score on both of their shots. Each team had one corner kick in the contest.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will conclude their 2010 season on Sunday at University of Central Oklahoma. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. MST start.
