Norlander Finishes 20th, Augusta State senior leads Sweden at WATC

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Augusta State standout Henrik Norlander finished 20th Sunday in the weather-plagued World Amateur Team Championship at Buenos Aires Golf Club.

A senior from Danderyd, Sweden, Norlander posted the low score among Sweden’s three-man team, a 5-over 77, and turned in his country’s top individual finish of the tournament. Sweden, which was tied for third after Thursday’s first round, finished in a tie for 13th in the 69-team field.

Two weather delays on Friday forced tournament officials to shorten the event to 54 holes. Then on Sunday, high winds at BAGC led to a final-round team scoring average of 152.67 strokes (par was 144). The 30-mph winds produced white caps on the lake in front of the ninth green.

France combined for an even-par 144 in the final round, good for a four-stroke victory over Denmark. The United States was third, followed by New Zealand in fourth. Scotland, the World Am’s defending champion, finished fifth.

Denmark’s Joachin Hansen shot a 1-over 73 and finished three strokes in front of France’s Alexander Levy and four shots clear of France’s Romain Wattel.

Founded in 1958, the World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) takes place every two years and is organized by the International Golf Federation (IGF). The IGF includes the national federations of golf in more than 110 countries and is the international federation for golf for the International Olympic Committee.
