Honolulu, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team came up short on Friday night in Pacific West Conference play, a rematch at Chaminade University. The Lady Penguins saw the same result as Tuesday, falling in four sets, 22-25, 29-27, 15-24, 19-25, to the host Silver Swords.
Dominican (3-22/0-13) showed sparks in set two after squandering an early 3-0 lead and falling behind 17-11. Still down at 20-14, the Lady Penguins pulled within two points thanks to three Silver Sword (6-12/3-8) attack errors. Chaminade called a timeout and came out of the huddle firing, pushing the lead to set point at 24-21.
Freshman Jessica Jones kept Dominican alive with a kill and junior Cayla Morphew followed with one of her three service aces. Another Chaminade attack error evened the score at 24 but the Silver Swords pulled ahead on the next play with another kill. The score knotted three more times before a Chaminade service error opened the door for the set-winning service ace by freshman Ria Falealili.
A 12-1 Chaminade run midway through set three blew open the door for the Silver Swords. Dominican took an early 3-2 lead in set four but trailed the rest of the way and the Silver Swords would go on to take the match.
Falealili led all players with 15 kills and shared a team-high 12 digs. Morphew added 11 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Ashlee Sand recorded eight kills and senior setter Brooke Swingle had seven kills to go with her 36 assists and 11 digs. Freshman libero Ashley Pittman led the team with Falealil in digs with a dozen.
Pisila Tukia led the Silver Swords with 12 kills. Kylee Pedro also reached double digits with 11 kills.
Dominican closes out its trip to Hawai'i tomorrow night when they return to Hawai'i Pacific University, where the Lady Penguins were swept on Wednesday night. The getaway match is slated for an early 5:30 p.m./8:30 p.m. Pacific start time.
