SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rolled to a three-game sweep over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians hit at 52%, committing just one attack error in 79 swings, as they took the match 25-16, 25-5 and 25-10. Catawba improves to 12-12 overall and 7-9 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 3-22 and 0-16.
Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted 11 kills and seven digs to pace the Lady Indians. Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) followed with seven kills and four blocks, while setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 22 assists. Kortney Conner (Franklin, NC) had eight kills for Brevard. Bethany Stevenson (Prattville, AL) dished out 17 assists with five digs, while libero Rebecca Schoonover (Palm City, FL) collected nine digs.
It was senior night for Catawba and all three contributed in the win. Lainey Edwards (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) collected eight digs and a pair of kills which marked the final two points of the match. Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) tallied five kills and added a pair of blocks and MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) had five kills, five digs, a block and a pair of aces.
Doss had a kill and a combo block with Whitmer to give Catawba an 8-4 lead in the opening game which the Lady Indians never gave back. Raye had a kill to push the margin to 15-10. Brevard pulled within 18-15 on an ace by Conner, but Catawba ran off six straight points for a 24-15 edge. Moran had a kill and block to start the run and White killed off the final point of the game.
Raye served two aces and Whitmer had two kills as the Lady Indians jumped to a 5-1 edge in game two. After a Conner kill to cut the lead to 8-4, Whitmer had two kills and a block, while Doss added a kill and two blocks as Catawba moved out to a 13-4 edge. Catawba would reel off the final 12 points of the game.
The Tornados had a short lead in game three at 2-1 following an ace by Schoonover. Following a Brevard block from Jamie Atkinson (Spartanburg, SC) and Erin Rollins (Murphy, NC), the lone Catawba attack error on the night, the Lady Indians surged in from with an eight-point run. White served two aces, while Meeks and Doss each had two kills and combined on a block. Raye later served two aces as Catawba pulled out to a 21-6 edge then Edwards killed off the last two points for the Lady Indians.
