Bronchos Overcome Strong Performances of Cardenas and Guthrie in Season Finale

EDMOND, OKLA. — Junior goalkeepers Sierra Cardenas (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) and Candice Guthrie (Peralta, N.M./Los Lunas HS) combined to make eight saves, but the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (5-13; LSC 2-9) dropped a 3-0 decision in Lone Star Conference action to University of Central Oklahoma (10-7-1; LSC 6-4-1), Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos entered the contest ranked tenth in the lasted NSCAA/Hendrickcars.com NCAA Division II South Central Region poll.

Ashton Morris picked up a rebound 7:15 into the contest and found the back of the Zia net to give UCO a 1-0 lead in the opening half. Summer Grantham scored 3:04 into the second half and Sherri Collins sealed the contest after picking up Lizzie Merritt’s rebound in front of the net, just 5:34 later.

Brook Serrano (So., F, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) had ENMU’s lone shot on goal, while the Bronchos held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Cardenas made six saves, while Guthrie shut out UCO, making two saves over the final 32:45 of play.

With the loss, the Zias have split their final four matches to conclude the 2010 season.
