Wolves open NSIC play with 67-55 win

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Wolves knew they had a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference test right out of the gates.  They also didn’t care.  The Wolves rode senior Jodi Reinschmidt’s second straight 20-point effort and junior Mikayla Barondeau’s 14 rebounds to a 67-55 victory over the visiting Concordia University-St. Paul Golden Bears Friday evening in their NSIC opener.

CSP, picked to finish third in the NSIC’s preseason coaches poll and fresh off a victory over 14th-ranked Michigan Tech last Saturday, shot just 35.7 percent from the floor and couldn’t keep the Wolves off the boards as they fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Meanwhile, the Wolves moved to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 on the young conference slate, picking up their third straight win in the process.

Reinschmidt, who also scored 20 points in the Wolves’ last win over Chadron State more than ten days ago, carried the Wolves’ shooters throughout the night.  The junior finished the night going 10 of 14 from the floor, while also snagging five rebounds and handing out a game-best four assists.

NSU bolted to a quick 14-5 lead by the 14:45 mark, but cooled off in the second half of that opening stanza.  Nearly five minutes later, the Wolves had only pushed their lead to an 18-5 advantage, trading missed baskets and missed opportunities with the Golden Bears.

CSP, a victim of cold shooting themselves, managed to cut that lead to a nine-point affair with seven minutes to go, but back-to-back three-pointers from Barondeau and junior point guard Emily Becken – NSU’s only two treys of the night – put the Wolves back in the driver’s seat.

The Golden Bears threatened twice more in the second half, getting to within seven at the 14:35 mark and two within four with just under seven minutes left to play.  NSU responded to the call on both occasions, however, using an 11-0 run to pull away from CSP’s final threat of the night.

Senior Krista Rabenberg sparked that final run with a lay-up off a Brittany Euerle assist, then turned around and fed Becken on a give-and-go play that ended with a conventional 3-point play and put the exclamation point on the NSU spurt.

Rabenberg finished the night with 12 points, while junior Jenna Higgins came off the bench to add 10 points.  Becken chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.  As a team, the Wolves committed just 10 turnovers all game.

CSP was led by senior guard Maurika Hickman’s 12 points, while senior Jineen Williams added nine points off the bench.  The Golden Bears shot just 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field and an even colder 31.6 percent (6 of 19) from three-point range on the night.

The Wolves will have little time to celebrate the victory, as they’re back on the court tomorrow night, playing host to St. Cloud State University.  The Huskies pulled out a tight 73-71 victory over U-Mary on Friday night.  Game time for Saturday’s match-up is set for 6 p.m. in NSU’s Wachs Arena.
