With Late Efforts Halted, Alaska Loses to UBC, 98-85

Alaska got a season-high 34 points from star forward Parrish West in a 98-85 loss to British Columbia Friday night. The Nanooks played the late game on the opening night of the 2010 Glacier Classic tournament.

West entered the game averaging 30 points per game—tops in the Great Northwest Conference. He played his best basketball in the final six minutes of the game when the team faced an 82-62 deficit.

West put up 13 points in the final stretch.

His 34 points ended up accounting for 40 percent of the Nanooks offense, which shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. He entered the game averaging 39 percent of the team’s offense.

The closest the Nanooks came to actually catching the Thunderbirds in the final minutes of the game was getting within 11 points. There was just 57 seconds to play, and they played with such intensity that the crowd still chanted for a miracle.

They launched Hail Mary after Hail Mary to West, but it was momentum that they’ll have to save for tomorrow night when they take on Hawaii Pacific.

Starters Jarrett Miller and Adrese Lavern followed west in scoring with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Miller shot 6-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Conversely, Lavern shot a pretty 5-for-9 from the field.

West led the team with a season-high seven rebounds. He also added three steals to his defense. Boe Edwards grabbed six boards, and Lavern followed with four more.

British Columbia had four players reach double digits in Josh Whyte (19), Doug Plumb (19), Nathan Yu (18) and Brent Malish (16).

The Thunderbirds will open Saturday’s session of the Glacier Classic with a 5:15 p.m. game against Alaska Anchorage. The Nanooks host Hawaii Pacific in the late game at 7:30 p.m.

Early game: Alaska Anchorage 75, Hawaii Pacific 53
