Women's Basketball: Western Oregon Edges NNU

Western Oregon never led in regulation before pulling out a 61-59 overtime win over Northwest Nazarene Wednesday in the opening GNAC women's conference game of the 2010-11 season.

Rylee Peterson led the Wolves with 17 points, including a layup with nine seconds left in the extra period to break a 59-59 tie. After that, WOU's defense didn't allow NNU to get off a shot.

The same thing happened in regulation as the Wolves came from five points down in the final 33 seconds.

Trailing 48-43, Sara Zahler knocked down a three-pointer. After a missed NNU free throw, Jamie Richardson drove the lane with 16 seconds left for the tying basket.

She was fouled but missed the free throw. NNU, however, was unable to get off a shot at the other end as time in regulation expired.

Northwest Nazarene led all the way after jumping to an early 16-4 lead except for two brief ties at 39-39 with 6:44 remaining and then in the final 16 seconds.

The overtime, however, was different. After Monica Garcia scored to put NNU ahead 50-48 in the first 15 seconds of the period, Western Oregon scored six straight points on a three-pointer by Richardson and later a free throw and then a basket by Lorrie Clifford.

The Wolves then held the lead until Briaunna King, who led NNU with 14 points and 16 rebounds, tied it with 34 seconds left on a layup. But, WOU responded on its next possession with Peterson's two-pointer.

In addition to King, NNU got 14 points off the bench from Chelsie Luke. Zahler and Richardson joined Peterson in double figures with 16 and 11 points.

WOU won despite turning the ball over 11 more times (29-18) than NNU. The Wolves accomplished that by outshooting the Crusaders 43.1 percent (25-58) to 29.6 (24-81).

Men's Basketball: Simon Fraser Earns First Victory

Ricky Berry scored 33 points to lead Simon Fraser to a 97-61 win over Quest (BC) in a non-conference game at SFU's West Gym.

Berry converted on 10 of 22 shots, including four of 10 treys, as the Clan snapped a three-game losing streak.

Simon Fraser also got 21 points and a game-high seven rebounds from Justin Brown and 10 points from three other players - Zach Frehlick, Connor Lewis and Chris Paredes.

Quest, which fell to 1-7, was led by Connor Heinrichs with 15 points. Jesse Norris had 13 point. Nico Unamagat and Tyler Thorau each had 10.

The Clan, who led 46-31 at halftime, shot 53.3 percent (32 of 60) in the win and also finished with 13 more rebounds (39-26).

SFU opens conference play Saturday hosting Montana State Billings.

Men's Soccer: WWU's Bardsley First Team All-American

Western Washington forward Gibson Bardsley was a first-team pick and Viking midfielder Kellan Brown received honorable mention honors on the 2010 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Soccer All-American squad. They were the only two GNAC players selected.

Bardsley is the first Viking and only the second GNAC player to earn first-team Daktronics All-America honors. Sam Charles of MSU Billings was also a first team selection last year when he was named National Player-of-the-Year.

“Gibson had a fantastic season,” WWU coach Travis Connell said.  “This season was by far his best.  He accomplished a lot individually and carried our team for much of the year.”

Bardsley had 18 goals, tying for the third-highest total in school history, and seven assists, finishing with 43 points.  He completed his four-year career with 41 goals, equaling the Viking standard set by Peter LaBarge in 1988 and 1989 and had a WWU-record 100 points.

Bardsley ranked second nationally in goals per game (1.06), third in points per game (2.53), fourth in total goals (18) and sixth in total points (43).

Brown had seven goals and six assists, and helped Western post six shutouts and have a 1.51 goals against average.  He was a first-team all-region pick for the second straight year.

The Daktronics All-American team is selected by the nation's sports information directors. Two Seattle University players have earned NSCAA first team honors – Bobby McAlister in 2004 and John Fishbaugher in 2007. That team is selected by the nation's coaches.

Football: Five Earn Daktronics All-Region Honors

Five players from GNAC schools have been selected to the Daktronics Super Region IV all-star team.

Named to the first team were center Taylor Boggs and running back Lyndon Rowells of Humboldt State and Western Oregon defensive back Caleb Singleton.

Two Central Washington players - defensive lineman Eugene Germany and linebacker Adam Bighill - were second team selections.

The Daktronics team is selected by the region's sports information directors.

First Team: Taylor Boggs, HSU (OL, 6-3, 303, Sr., Upland, CA); Lyndon Rowells, HSU (RB, 5-10, 200, Jr., Largo, Fla.); Caleb Singleton, WOU (Saf, 6-4, 215. Sr., Salem, OR). Second Team: Eugene Germany, CWU (DL, 6-3, 276, Sr., Pomona, CA); Adam Bighill, CWU (LB, 5-10, 222, Sr., Montesano, WA).
