COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College will honor one of its most loyal citizens - 40-year men's basketball official scorekeeper Cliff Breiner - prior to Tuesday's game versus Saint Anselm College at the Ross Sports Center.
The recognition ceremony will take place at approximately 7:25 p.m., highlighting an eventful evening for Saint Michael's athletics.
Tuesday's action at the Ross kicks off at 5:30 p.m., as the Saint Michael's women's basketball team (3-2, 2-2 Northeast-10 Conference) will look to extend its two-game winning streak and perfect home record versus Saint Anselm (3-5, 1-4 NE-10). The men's basketball contest featuring Saint Michael's (3-4, 1-3 NE-10) and Saint Anselm (6-1, 4-1 NE-10) is scheduled to tip-off at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Saint Michael's will again serve as a host site for the Marine Corps League's Toys For Kids Drive at Tuesday's basketball doubleheader. Much like at last Wednesday's basketball doubleheader, any fan bringing a new, unwrapped toy to the Ross this Tuesday will be admitted free to both games. Toys for Kids of Vermont is a program sponsored by the Marine Corps League, Donald Cook Detachment (Cook is a 1956 graduate of Saint Michael's). More information about Toys for Kids of Vermont can be found on their website, www.toysforkidsvt.com.
Just before the men's game, Saint Michael's will honor Breiner, the program's official scorer from 1970 until he stepped down from the post at the end of last season. Breiner began working for Saint Michael's before the Ross Sports Center was built 37 years ago, when the Purple Knights played their home games at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vt. He was the scorekeeper for both home and away games from 1970-97, and the home men's basketball scorekeeper for the last 13 seasons. He was the official scorer for nearly 900 Saint Michael's contests over the last four decades, and despite ill health, is expected to be in attendance for the ceremony.
Also on Tuesday's schedule for the Purple Knights is a key men's ice hockey contest between Saint Michael's (3-2-0, 2-2-0 ECAC East) and third-ranked Norwich University (4-1-1, 3-0-1 ECAC East) at 7 p.m. at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt. Saint Michael's sits just three points shy of the league-leading Cadets in the ECAC East standings, and the Purple Knights seek their first win versus Norwich in 25 previous meetings.
