Lewis Athletics - The Flight Plan

Men's basketball hosts a pair of non-conference contests and women's basketball hosts in-region opponent No. 14 Grand Valley State on Saturday; highlighting the week in Lewis University Athletics.
Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team split a pair of GLVC contests over the weekend as the Flyers defeated Maryville, 60-45 on Thursday (Dec. 2) evening and fell to Missouri-St. Louis, 69-66 on Saturday (Dec. 4) afternoon. In the victory over Maryville, guards Dennis Thomas, Jr. (21 points) and Chris McClellan (19 points) combined for 40 of Lewis' 60 points while holding the Saints to a 37.5% shooting performance from the floor. Maryville's 40 shots was the fewest from a Flyer opponent since Quincy attempted 40 on Jan. 30, 2004. Junior center Marty Strus chipped in 10 points in the win. In the loss to Missouri-St. Louis, Triton junior guard Dominic Williams drained the game winning shot from 35-feet at the buzzer to defeat Lewis. Strus topped the Flyers with 17 points while Thomas, Jr. added 14 points and four assists. The Flyers play a pair of non-conference games this week hosting IU Northwest on Tuesday (Dec. 7) and St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday (Dec. 11) evening.

Women's Basketball: The women's basketball team opened up the 2010-11 GLVC campaign with a pair of victories over Maryville, 77-56 on Thursday (Dec. 2) evening and Missouri-St. Louis, 92-45 on Saturday (Dec. 4) afternoon. In the win over Maryville, senior Kelly Monaco drained a career-high six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points and senior Jenny Turpel finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Senior Kady Currin scored 15 points and tied a career-high with nine assists. In the victory over Missouri-St. Louis, Turpel led all scorers with 14 points while Monaco, Labrenthia Murdock and Madeline Kish each had 13 points. All 12 Flyers scored for Lewis and Currin, the GLVC leader in assists, had seven assists. The Flyers host in-region foe No. 14 Grand Valley State this week on Saturday (Dec. 11) at 5 PM.

Women's Cross Country: Senior Kathryn Hague became the fourth Flyer in school-history to repeat as an All-American as she placed 28th overall with a time of 22:02.06 at the 6K NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Dec. 4) morning. Hague was also the top finisher from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
