Alaska Loses Conference Opener to UAA, 73-46

For the entire first half, the Alaska women’s basketball team hung with No. 15 Alaska Anchorage in the first game of GNAC play. The Nanooks headed to the locker room down 32-24 at halftime, but saw that gap widen in the second half.

The Nanooks got six points from three players in the first half – Nicole Bozek, Autumn Greene and Jeni Gabriel. Whitney Anderson effectively moved the ball between shooters and picked up three assists.

The Nanooks committed 16 turnovers in the first half but were able to overcome the blunders. In the second half, turnovers dismantled the team.

There were 23 turnovers in the second half. Worse, the Seawolves converted those turnovers for points. They outscored the Nanooks 32-0 in points off turnovers in the half.

The Nanooks were without Anderson at the start of the second half. With three fouls, head coach Cody Burgess decided it best to limit her playing time in the early goings of the second half.

The team made some adjustments in her absence and scored 10 points off the bench but couldn’t quite keep pace with the Seawolves.

Autumn Greene led the team with 12 points. Bozek followed with 11. The duo shared the team lead in rebounds with six each.

Anderson and Jeni Gabriel each added six points. Jessica Harrison and Nicole Pingayak each grabbed four rebounds.

Nikki Aden hurt the Nanooks most for the Seawolves. She finished with a game-high 18 points. She capitalized on mistakes and led with seven steals and shot for a perfect 5-for-5 mark at the free throw line.

Alaska travels to Anchorage next weekend for a pair of nonconference games against Dixie State (Dec. 10, 5 p.m.) and Minot State (Dec. 11, 5 p.m.) They will not face UAA again until Feb. 24 in Anchorage.
