Denver, Colo.- The University of Tampa Spartans (2-2) won its final contest of the Colorado Mines Tournament Saturday evening defeating Regis University (1-3) by an 84-61 decision in the Regis Fieldhouse held in Denver, Colo.
The Spartans controlled much of the first half enjoying as much as a 14 point lead to begin the game shooting 45.2 percent from the field goal range. Tampa's Lindsey Watson produced as an impressive offensive onslaught tallying 14 points in the first half and hitting six for six from behind the charity stripe. Also adding to UT's success was senior Gianna Messina connecting on three of five attempts from behind the arc as starting for her first game this year, senior Catriana Messina did not shy away from the challenge adding seven points of her own to the board. At the expiration of 20 minutes the Spartans ran into the locker room with a ten point lead over the Rangers.
In the second period, Regis University would go on a 7-0 run with 14 minutes to play in regulation cutting UT's lead to just seven. Following a Tom Jessee time out, Tampa returned to the court and pushed the advantage back up to double figures as the Rangers would never be able to make a come back.
The Spartans' back court had much to do with the victory in Colorado tallying a combined total of 64 of the 84 points scored in the contest going 23-44 from the field. Tampa out shot its opponents by a 14 percent clip and was able to connect on 15 of 19 attempts from the free throw line.
Messina led all scorers for the second consecutive game registering a team-high 26 points. Watson, a freshman from Apopka, Fla. dished out a team-best seven assists while also racking in her first collegiate double-double scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 boards as Taja Green was just short of the same achievement tabbing 12 and eight respectively. Rounding out the double figure scorers for the night was C. Messina registering 15 points and attempted a team-high nine free throws.
Tampa returns to its home court Wed., Dec. 1st as the team takes on Valdosta State for the second time this year. UT fell by a one point margin to the Blazers no more than 11 days ago and will look to avenge its loss.
