(Warrensburg, Mo.) – University of Central Missouri Mules basketball sealed its final non-conference test with a 40-point margin of victory. Six Mules scoring in double-figures led the Cardinal and Black to a 100-60 win over Missouri Baptist, Saturday. It was 13 points more than the largest margin of victory to date this season.
It’s been almost a year since the Mules (5-1) dropped 100 points in the bucket, dating back to a, 102-81, win over C.W. Post in the High Desert Classic last December.
Senior guard Ryan Harris checked in and nailed his first three-pointer giving the Mules a 15-5 lead. Harris played 14 minutes in his return to the court after missing the first five games with an injury. Sophomore guard Kenny Democuchet opened the scoring for the Spartans (4-6) with a long three, followed by a jumper in the paint. His effort was the strongest on the team but nine minutes into the first period he had all nine Spartan points and the Mules led, 25-9.
The Mules took a 49-28 lead into halftime fueled by efficient shooting from beyond the arc (33%). Junior Boo Hunter led the Mules with seven points and five rebounds after 20 minutes. The ability to move the ball in and around the paint helped UCM get good looks and poorly contested shots.
Missouri Baptist cut the Central Missouri lead down to 18 early in the second half but could not contain Joel Barkers as he led the Mules on a 12-0 run with five points and three rebounds. The lead ballooned to as high as 43 points before it was over.
Barkers led all scorers with 15 points. The Mules out-rebounded the Spartans 55-to-42, and held them to only 27.7 % from the field. MBU sent the Mules to the line 34 times and they cashed in on 22 points from the charity stripe. Bryce Brunz facilitated the offense with five assists and the Mules topped MBU 21-to-4 in that category.
The complete team effort was due to the Mules’ 48 points from the bench. That included 12 points and five boards from Matt Killen as he went five-for-five from the field.
Next, Mules basketball travels to Bolivar, Mo., to take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on Tuesday, November 30. That contest will start at 7:30 p.m. and marks the opening of the 2010-11 MIAA conference schedule.
