Spartans Earn Preseason Top 25 Billing

LILBURN, Ga. - The University of Tampa will enter the 2010-11 women's basketball season as the No. 25 team in the nation, as announced by the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll.

The Spartans are coming off a 26-5 season where it set a school record for victories in a season and won the Sunshine State Conference regular season title. Head coach Tom Jessee's squad advanced to the NCAA South Regional semifinals and finished the year at No. 18 in the final poll.

UT returns two starters and just five letterwinners from last year's squad, including second-leading scorer and rebounder Gianna Messina. The senior guard averaged 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds to go with a team-high 97 assists and 70 3-pointers. Fellow starter Taja Green (11.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg) also returns from last year's starting lineup.

Tampa looks to minimize its losses through a group of five transfers, which includes three from junior colleges and two from NCAA Division I institutions. The roster also includes three newcomers from the high school ranks.

The Spartans open the season on Saturday, Nov. 20 at South Region opponent Valdosta State University. Among the UT opponents in the top 25 are No. 10 Indianapolis as potential NCAA South Regional opponents Arkansas Tech and Delta State University are ranked one-two respectively. Florida Southern, Colorado Mines and Rollins are UT opponents who also received top-25 votes.
