Sellers Gets 500th Career Win in 67-66 Thriller Over UNA

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – It’s somehow fitting that the 500th win of Georgia College head coach Terry Sellers’ career would come in his home state, on a University of Montevallo campus that he spent five years as a young assistant coach in the late 70s. It’s also fitting that the Bobcats (4-2) would need the grit and determination Sellers has instilled in all of his 17-plus years as GC head coach to pull out a 67-66 win over the University of North Alabama (2-4).

The Bobcats led in a runaway at halftime, 40-19. The Lions came out of the break a different team, knocking down a whopping 60 percent (15-25) of their second-half shots. UNA eventually took over the lead at the 13:39 mark in the second half, holding it for the next 11:40 until a Jared Holmes (Indianapolis) jumper gave the advantage back to GC.

Over the final 2:59, the Bobcats would spread the wealth, with Holmes, Ryan Aquino (Roswell, Ga.), Andre Mikell (Snellville, Ga.) and Mike Augustine (Waterloo, Ill.) all scoring points. Augustine gave the Bobcats a three-point lead with seconds left on a pair of free throws, his only two points in the game. UNA would cut the lead to one with two tosses of its own, but get no closer.

Holmes finished with 25 points, a GC career-high for the junior college transfer from Kankakee Community College. Holmes also pulled down six boards while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor.

Aquino was the only other Bobcat in double-digit scoring with 12 points, yanking down seven boards. Leading the team in rebounds was senior forward Josh Hurst (Athens, Ga.), nabbing 11 with six points. Mikell had a solid line of nine points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.

GC shot 40 percent (25-63) from the floor while the Lions hit for 44 percent (20-45). The Bobcats held a slight rebound advantage at 39-34, but cleaned up on the offensive glass 15-6.

Sellers hit a pair of milestones this season, getting his 300th win as GC head coach in the win over Carson-Newman College Nov. 19. He is now 500-248 (.668) all-time as a collegiate head coach, including his nine seasons at Alabama Southern Community College.

The Bobcats return home to square off against Lander University (3-2, 0-1 PBC) Saturday, Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m. in this season’s opening Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match-up for GC. The Bearcats most recently lost to Division I Winthrop University 65-46 this evening.
