Gonzalez Places Third at 197 Pounds at Mat Town Open

LOCK HAVEN – Junior James Gonzalez finished third in the 197-pound bracket to lead six East Stroudsburg University wrestlers who competed in the Mat Town Open on Saturday at Lock Haven.

Gonzalez won a 7-2 decision over Lock Haven’s Chris White to reach the semifinals, where he came up a point short (2-1) in his bout against Fred Garcia (unrostered) in his bid to make the finals. Gonzalez came back with a 12-4 major decision over C.J. Shaika of American International, then notched a 4-3 decision vs. Matt Loew of Hofstra in the third-place bout.

Redshirt junior Adam Hluschak had the busiest day on the mat for the Warriors, wrestling five matches to finish sixth of 13 wrestlers in the 141-pound bracket. Hluschak’s day included a pin of Bucknell’s Adam Healey late in the second period and a 10-1 major decision over Drexel’s Nick Dragonette in consecutive consolation bouts as he faced five straight Division I wrestlers. Hluschak wrestled in the NCAA Division II Championships last year.

Senior Jesse Dunn was fifth of seven wrestlers at 165 pounds after taking a tough 3-2 loss to Colton Spade of Lock Haven in his opening bout. He was pinned with five seconds left in the second period by Nicholas Czapla of Bucknell and took fifth with a medical forfeit over Cade Blair of Old Dominion.

Sophomore Will Weaver notched two wins at 285 pounds and faced two wrestlers from Cornell and two from Hofstra. He edged Paul Snyder (Hofstra) with a 3-1 decision and later won a 4-2 decision over Lukasz Stala (Cornell) in his first consolation match.

The Warriors will be back on the mat next Saturday at the PSAC Championships at Bloomsburg.
