Panther Men End Fall Season with Two Wins at FIRA Classic

Varsity eight sets tone for event with a 22-second victory over second-place Jacksonville

FELLSMERE, Fla. (Men’s Rowing) – The Florida Tech Panthers closed out their fall season with two first-place finishes at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Fall Classic on Saturday at Canal 54.

In the opening event, the varsity eight set the tone for the day by winning the race at a time of 10:08. Jacksonville, the next closest boat, came across the line 22 seconds after the Panthers at 10:30. Rollins “A” team grabbed third, followed by Jacksonville “B” and Rollins “B” teams.

The Panthers’ momentum would carry over into their next race, the freshman/novice four. Tech unofficially won the dash at 12:03, however, the Crimson and Gray rowed as an exhibition boat since varsity coxswain Sal Macaraig steered the ship. Jacksonville “A” held off Rollins “A” by three seconds, 12:47 to 12:50, to take first-place honors. Jacksonville “B” came in fourth, Rollins “B” took fifth and Florida State earned sixth at 14:12.

Tech closed out the race and its abbreviated season by placing first in the varsity four with a time of 11:25. Rollins “A” crossed the invisible line at 12:13 to bring home second. Rollins “B” took third, Rollins “C” snatched fourth and Florida State once again rounded out the field.

Following a successful fall season, the Panthers will look to get strong and quicker in preparation for their spring slate, which will begin around March.
