Morris Takes Down Coker in Home Opener

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker’s Jasmine Alston (Sumter, S.C.) recorded a double-double, with  a game high 22 points and 11 rebounds in the Cobra women’s 70-61 loss to Morris College in their home opener on Wednesday night.

The Cobras came out strong and battled the Morris Hornets through six ties and eight lead changes in just the first 20 minutes of play. A last second basket gave Coker a 32-31 lead as they headed to the lock room at halftime.

The second half began much like the first as Coker took an early five point lead, but with just six minutes remaining, Morris took the lead and didn’t look back. Both teams were plagued by turnovers, with a combined 48 in the game (25-Coker, 23- Morris), while Morris got substantial help off the bench, including 19 second half points compared to just two for Coker.

Joining Alston in double figures was Lucy Fish (Nottingham, England) with 19 points, including going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, while Maija Castren (Vantaa, Finland) added eight points and five rebounds.

For Morris, Shaniqua Campbell led the way with a 16 point, 10 rebound double-double and Clarissa Crump had 11 points and nine boards. Erica Wilkerson also scored in double figures netting 10 points with four rebounds.

Coker will return to action this weekend, when the Cobras travel to Mars Hill College for the Mars Hill Tournament. Coker will play on Friday and Saturday.
