Lewis vs. Wayne State game notes

TAKE OFF: Following a win on Monday over Upper Iowa, Lewis women’s basketball (1-1) continues their non-conference slate with a home game against Wayne State (0-2) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. LewisFlyers.com will feature links to live stats, video and the WJOL 1340 AM broadcast with Mark Vasko on the call.

SERIES HISTORY VS. WAYNE STATE: Lewis is 4-1 all-time over Wayne State. The last meeting between the two clubs came on Nov. 18, 1989. Lewis won 79-69.

LAST TIME OUT: Three Flyers finished in double-figures as Lewis defeated non-conference foe Upper Iowa 70-58 on Monday evening in the Flyers' home opener.
Kelly Monaco drained four 3-pointers, all in the first half, and finished with a team-best 16 points. She had back-to-back steals in the first half which set up four points in the middle of a 17-2 Lewis run which helped Lewis take a lead as large as 15 in the opening half.

Lewis led by as many as 21 in the second half before cruising to the 12-point victory.

Sam Rinehart finished with 14 points, making all seven free throws she attempted. Jenny Turpel added 12 points and three steals. Lory Shaw totaled 10 rebounds and eight points. Kady Currin had eight assists and four points.

Lewis made 11-of-11 free throws in the opening half before finishing 22-of-25 for the game. The Flyers shot 44.7 percent from the field while limiting Upper Iowa to 38.2 percent shooting.

NEW FIVE: Lory Shaw and Sam Rinehart were inserted into the starting lineup on Monday. The start for Rinehart was the first of her career while Shaw's start was her fourth after making three last year.

THEY'RE FREE FOR A REASON: Lewis made 22-of-25 free throw attempts on Monday against Upper Iowa. The Flyers made their first 14 of the game. Last season Lewis made 20 or more free throws in a game four times.

SINGLE DIGIT ATTEMPTS: Jenny Turpel finished 6-of-9 for the floor on Monday against Upper Iowa. Only nine other times during her junior and sophomore seasons did she fail to take 10 field goal attempts.

CAREER-BEST: Sam Rinehart's 14 points against Upper Iowa was a career high.

NATIONAL SCHEDULE: Four of Lewis' opponents were ranked in the preseason Top 25 Poll: Tusculum (#4), Indianapolis (#10), Drury (#16), Grand Valley State (#23).

PICKED FOR SECOND: Lewis was picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference North Division, earning 52 points and two first place votes. UW-Parkside was picked to finish first in the division. The Rangers earned 65 points and 13 first place votes.

DON'T PLAN A VACATION IN JANUARY: Of Lewis' nine home GLVC games this season, seven are in the month of January. The schedule includes a four games in eight days stretch on Jan. 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th.

NO OT NEEDED: Lewis didn't play a single overtime game last season.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, LAKESHORE: Lewis will play two games on Lakeshore Public Television this season. The first contest will be on Saturday, Jan. 8 against Quincy at 5:30. The second will be on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 against Drury. Lewis defeated Missouri-St. Louis at Southern Indiana on Lakeshore last season.

THEY CALL HER MONEY: Kelly Monaco, known as Money to her teammates, ranks sixth all-time in career 3-pointers with 141. She needs 9 to pass Darcee Schmidt (2003-07) for fifth place.

JT's CAREER POINTS: Jenny Turpel's 1,395 points ranks 7th all-time in Lewis history. Another 500-point season would put her 2nd all-time in Lewis history. First up though is 6th place Mary Niego, who totaled 1,563 from 1980-83.

JT's CAREER BLOCKS: Jenny Turpel's 91 blocks ranks fifth all-time in Lewis history. She is four short of passing Jackie Wayne (1987-91) for fourth place. For her career, Turpel is averaging exactly one block a game.

AT HOME: Next up for the Flyers is another GLIAC school with Ferris State coming to town on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. start.
