PEORIA, ILLINOIS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team opened their season with a good loss, if that is possible, on Friday night. They dropped a 66-55 decision at NCAA Division I Bradley University at Carver Arena in front of 8,014 fans.
The Javelinas (0-1) pulled to within six points with 8:34 remaining in the game after senior Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) knocked down a pair of free throws, but they could get no closer. The Braves (1-0) used a 15-4 run over the next 5:16 to put the game away.
Playing in his first game for the Hoggies in six and a half years, junior forward Wayne Lovings (Round Rock/Stony Point HS) made the most of his first chance back on the floor. He led the team with 15 points and a game high eight rebounds while knocking down 7-of-11 shots from the field.
The Javelinas shot 41.1 percent from the field, but struggled from three-point range making only 5-of-21 opportunities. They went 4-of-5 at the foul line. They were solid on the glass getting out rebounded by one, 35-34. The Hogs committed 19 turnovers, but did dish out 16 assists.
Senior Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) added 10 points and four assists off the bench while junior Mark Stevenson (South Bend, IN/Chabot College) added nine points and five boards.
The Braves had four players score in double figures and shot 45.3 percent from the field. Walt Lemon Jr. led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Dodie Dunson went 6-of-8 from the field en route to 14 points. D. Simms-Edwards added 13 points, six assists and five boards while Will Egolf had 12 points and seven rebounds at center.
Bradley made only 3-of-17 three-point attempts, but picked up 15 points at the foul line on 23 attempts. They committed 15 turnovers in the game.
The Javelinas return to the court on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for their home opener against St. Edward’s at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
