MAUI, HI – Chaminade senior forward Shane Hanson (Canyon Lake, CA/Temescal Canyon) drained five three-pointers en route to a 23-point morning, while junior 7-foot center Mamadou Diarra (Bamako, Mali/Stoneridge Prep) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as the upset-minded Silverswords defeated Division I Oklahoma University 68-64 Wednesday morning in the final round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
The win moves the Silverswords to 4-2 on the season while Oklahoma drops to 3-3. Chaminade finished seventh in the eight-team tournament that features seven Division I programs along with the Silverswords.
Chaminade had been bucking for an upset after taking #2 Michigan State deep into the second half on Monday before the Spartans finally pulled out the win. The Silverswords lost to Wichita State on Tuesday.
Hanson was deadly from beyond the arc, hitting 5 of 11 three-point attempts while going 9 for 16 from the floor. He also had seven rebounds while playing 39 minutes. His work on the glass produced more boards than any single player on the Sooners.
But the dominator on the glass was Mamadou who cleaned up nine of his 11 on the defensive end of the floor. He ended the game making 5 of 8 shots from the field and was 5 for 5 from the foul line.
Shooting from the line made the difference. The Silverswords shot 90.9% from the charity stripe after making 10 of 11 free throw attempts, while the Sooners converted just 8 of 14 (57.1%). The teams were fairly even in shooting from the floor with Oklahoma holding a negligible 47.2% to 46.4% advantage, while the Seasiders made 6 of 16 three-point trys (37.5%) compared to Oklahoma’s 6 for 22 (27.3%) morning.
Senior guard Steven Bennett (Los Angeles, CA/Dorsey) also reached double figures for the Silverswords, dropping 14 points while shooting 50% (6 for 12) from the field. He made both free throw attempts and handed out four assists in 40 minutes of action.
Cade Davis led all scorers with 24 points. He also topped the Sooners in rebounding with six. Andrew Fitzgerald posted 11 points in the loss.
Chaminade’s win over a Division I foe marks the second one this month involving PacWest basketball teams. The Dixie State women’s squad rallied from a huge deficit in the first half to beat Utah State 71-67 on Nov. 12.
