After a back-and-forth first half that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes the Bearcats found themselves down at the half 45-40, due in large part to Peru State’s 16-of-19 from the free-throw line. Peru State led the first part of the second half and had its biggest lead of the game at 62-57 with 11:25 remaining in the ballgame. After that, the Bearcats (4-0) locked-down on defense the rest of the game, allowing just three baskets, and went on a 25-7 run to close out Peru State in the final 11:25.
Northwest shot 40 percent from the field and overcame a season-low 53 percent (9-17) from the charity stripe in the win. Peru State shot just under 33 percent from the floor, including 25.7 percent in the second half and went just 2-of-16 from behind the three-point line in the contest.
The Bearcats forced 20 turnovers while committing 13 and had a huge advantage in the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 48-26 in the lane. The Northwest bench also out-scored Peru State’s 20-9. Alexis Boeh, in her first action of the season, and Tara Roach led the Bearcats with eight points each off the bench. Boeh, who returned from injury for Northwest, also tied for the team-high with four assists and had two blocks in the win.
Gabby Curtis chipped in with 14 points in the game and added four rebounds. Abby Henry had 13 and dished-out three assists. Melissa Nyquist pulled down a season-high seven rebounds and handed-out four assists in the game. Shelly Martin also had seven rebounds and four assists to go along with seven points for the Bearcats.
Nyahok Duop led the Bobcats with 24 points, 19 of which came in the first half. Alicia Bender and Katie Potter each chipped in with 15 points for Peru State.
Northwest will begin MIAA play this upcoming week as the Bearcats travel to Emporia State on Dec. 1. The fifth-ranked Hornets are the defending Division II national champions. The game will be the first of four straight games on the road to open conference play for the Bearcats.
