UWF Finishes Season 14-5-2
WINTER PARK, Fla. – The West Florida men’s soccer team came up short in a 1-0 battle against No. 5 ranked and tournament host Rollins College in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional on Friday. With the loss, the Argonauts finished the 2010 season with a record of 14-5-2.
Rollins (12-3-3) went ahead with the game’s only goal at the 27:27 mark. Nick Sowers sent in a cross from the left corner, where Bradley Welch was open to strike the ball into the right corner of the goal. The Rollins defense kept UWF from making many dangerous attacking opportunities, limiting the Argonauts to just one shot in the first half.
UWF had more chances early in the second half with three quick shots in the first 15 minutes, but the Argos could not find the back of the net. Later in the half in the 78th minute, senior Nikola Kljaic (Zagreb, Croatia/Klasicna Ginnazija) picked up his second yellow card of the match, forcing UWF to play a man down for the final 12 minutes of the match. The Argos would attempt just one more shot.
Senior goalkeeper Elliott Purdom (Wilmslow, England/Viterbo) kept UWF in the game with three saves. The keeper finished his two-year career at UWF with a goals against average of 0.98, ranking him second in school history.
The 2010 season was a successful one for the UWF men’s soccer team, as the Argos won their eighth Gulf South Conference championship and fifth in a row. UWF also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history.
