HAYWARD– The Cal State Stanislaus Warrior volleyball team was defeated in four sets (25-21, 18-25, 12-25, 21-25) Friday night against Cal State East Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Warriors record is now 8-10 in the CCAA and 11-12 overall
Cal State East Bay took control early in set one, but the Warriors stayed within reach of the Pioneers. The score was tied seven times in the first set before Cal State Stanislaus took the lead and finished with a comfortable four-point gap. With a strong finish in set one, the Warriors took a 6-3 lead over the Pioneers, but not long after CSUEB tied the score at point seven. The Warriors did not gain control again throughout the second set and was unable to get past the Pioneers effective defense.
Set three belonged to East Bay entirely, not allowing the Warriors within five points after an 11-6 score. Cal State Stanislaus did not give up the fight easily against the Pioneers, with a tie score eight times throughout the set, but in the end the Pioneers pulled away with a lead to end the match at 25-21.
Melissa Bishop led the Warriors with 8 kills. Lianne Vicchio recorded 7 kills and Andrea Fett had 6 kills with only 1 error and hitting .312 on the night.
Eva Chafeh contributed to the teams totals with 5 kills and led with 13 digs. Megan Britton had 12 digs and 3 service aces.
The Warrior's blocking kept the Warriors alive through four sets. The Warriors recorded 7 team blocks to the Pioneers 3 team blocks. Four Warriors–Jessica Lehner, Kaycee Gow, Bishop, and Vicchio– tallied two blocks.
Roxanne Neely led the Pioneers with 13 kills followed by Sukhjit Athwal with 11 kills and Kitona Offord with 10 kills. K.C. Walsh led her team with 31 assists and Neely had 20 assists.
Next week the Warriors return home to compete against Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
