TURLOCK Earlier in the week, the Chico State women¹s soccer team dealt a serious blow to Cal State Stanislaus¹ postseason aspirations with a 2-1 win at University Soccer Stadium. Saturday the Warriors successfully wrapped up
a conference tournament berth and avoided its second loss in four days to the Wildcats, scoring twice in the first half and twice in the second period to cruise to a 4-0 victory in the final regular season match for both teams at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.
With the loss, Chico State finishes the 2010 season with an overall record of 8-9-1 and a 7-8-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State Stanislaus, which will advance (and host) its conference tournament opener next Friday, concludes the regular season 12-5-1 overall and 10-5-1 in CCAA play. It marks the Warriors¹ first trip to the CCAA tourney since 2005.
The Wildcats were held to just three shots in the first half, two of them both shots on goal by Denni Jo Berger and Blake Lopes coming in the first 11 minutes. Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to a 1-0 lead when, with 6:23 elapsed, Karenee Demery took a feed from Alexia Poon and connected for her conference-leading 18th goal of the year. In the 19th minute the Warriors struck again Marissa Dunaway scoring on a free kick from 20 yards out to put Cal Stanislaus up 2-0.
It was still 2-0 in the second half when Chico State started peppering the Stanislaus goal, but despite four shots in a 10-minute period, the Warriors were able to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Kelsey Ikemoto¹s shot in the 54th minute was saved by Stanislaus goalkeeper Millie Brown; 40 seconds later Jennie Barto¹s scoring attempt sailed wide. In the 59th minute Barto missed again wide left, and Ashley Perlman¹s shot in the 63rd minute was blocked. Later in the period Stanislaus scored twice within two minutes to put the match away in the 65th minute Shelby Cargile booted home her first
goal of the season to make it 3-0; then in the 67th minute Dunaway took a rebound and kicked the ball past Chico State goalkeeper Sydney Oliver to put the Warriors on top by four. The ¹Cats took three more shots down the stretch, but could not find the back of the net, and Stanislaus ran out the clock for the 4-0 victory.
The Warriors outshot the Wildcats 17-12 on the afternoon, and also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Saturday¹s loss was a bittersweet end to a Chico State season that saw the Wildcats win just three times in their last 10 matches. The four scores by Stanislaus were the most goals against the ¹Cats in a single match since losing to Cal State L.A. 4-1 back on Oct. 3, 2008.
