LOWELL – Senior Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and added an assist, as the No. 2 UMass Lowell River Hawks broke the program record for consecutive wins, capturing their 17th straight, in a 6-1 victory over Franklin Pierce at home on Cushing Field Saturday afternoon.
The record was previously set in 2005, as UMass Lowell captured 16 straight en route to the program’s first NCAA National Championship.
With the victory, UMass Lowell improves to an unblemished 17-0 overall on the year and 7-0 in Northeast-10 conference play. Franklin Pierce fell to 6-9 overall with a 3-4 mark in conference action.
Less than 10 minutes into the game, midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, Mass.) was carrying the ball up the field, crossed to the right side of the circle and shot it into a crowd in front of the cage. Macy collected the stray ball and got it to classmate Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) who banged in her 19th goal of the year in the seventh minute of play.
Franklin Pierce retaliated, breaking UMass Lowell’s consecutive shutout minute streak at 606:48. The Ravens were consistently pressuring in the circle and junior Kimberly Jaksina had a hard shot from five yards out on the right side of the cage, tying the game in the 11th minute of play.
The tally was just the third goal UMass Lowell has allowed all season, as they have outscored opponents 85-3 on the year.
Junior Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H.) helped end the 1-1 knot, as she got the ball to Macy, at the front and center of the cage at 18:52. Macy hit a slow backhander to the back of the cage, sneaking it past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Rachel Baxter’s right side, tallying the eventual game-winner.
Before the half was over, Hansbury added an insurance tally, her second goal of the season, with just 40 seconds remaining before the break. Day found Hansbury at the top of the circle and the defender hit a bomb to the back of the cage, putting the River Hawks up 3-1 at the end of the first.
In the second, NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week Sarah Wilcox (Old Town, Maine) capitalized on a River Hawk penalty corner, as she fought through a cluster in front of the cage and grabbed the ball off the goalkeeper’s pads. Baxter dove for a save and Wilcox put the ball past her while she was down in the 50th minute of play.
Just three minutes later, senior Lizzy Ales (Arlington, Mass.) received a pass from the top left of the circle from junior Abby Auld (Waltham, Mass.) and tipped it in on the left corner of the cage to put UMass Lowell up 5-1.
Finally, Macy notched her second of the game and 23rd of the year in the 58th minute of play, receiving a pass from NE-10 Freshman of the Week Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) off another penalty corner and sending the ball to the back of the cage and securing the final score of 6-1.
The River Hawks out-cornered their opponent 9-5 in the game, including a 7-2 edge in the second half. They also owned the 24-9 advantage in shots, holding the Ravens to just two shots in the second, compared to 13 of their own.
NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) made three saves on the afternoon, while Baxter finished the game with nine stops.
The River Hawks will play their final regular season road game on Tuesday at Bentley in a conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
