SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a 3-2 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians rallied from an early deficit to improve to 10-7-1 overall and 3-6 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 3-14-1 and 2-7. Catawba, who finished seventh in the league, will likely draw conference co-champion Carson-Newman in the opening round of the SAC Tournament.
Brevard took the early lead after a defensive miscue left Andrew Gallowitch (Monroe, NC) alone in the box and he scored into the empty net in the 13th minute. Catawba’s Kyle Griewisch (Banner Elk, NC/Avery Co. HS) equalized for the Indians on a solo run down the right side. The freshman raced past the defense, pushed a ball past keeper Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, SC) then tallied his fourth of the season.
Catawba took the lead late in the half. Jorge Sucar (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) knocked down a clearing pass and beat Shaw to the far post. The Indians went up by two goals in the 79th minute as Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) fed a through ball to Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS), who got a toe to the ball seconds in front of a sliding Shaw.
Brevard answered right back less than four minutes later. Sean Allison (Santa Rosa, CA) got the goal to cut the margin back to one goal. The Tornados had several chances late to pull level, but were denied. Jaime Vallacis (Miami, FL) failed to get a shot off at the top of the box and Gallowitch fired wide in the closing minutes.
Catawba doubled up the Tornados in shot attempts 18-9 with the Indians holding a 3-2 edge in corners. Josh Payne (Candler, NC/Enka HS) went the distance in goal for the Tribe and recorded two saves. Shaw had six saves for the Tornados before leaving after the contact with Preston. Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, FINLAND) had one save over the final 12 minutes.
