DURANGO - The Grizzlies were on the road to close out the 2010 men's soccer season on Saturday, facing off against the defending NCAA Division II champs on their home turf, and put forth their best result against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) foe Fort Lewis but fell 3-0.
With the loss, Adams State finishes its second season with a 1-16 overall record, and first season of RMAC play with a 1-13 mark, placing eighth in the league with three points. The Skyhawks, who improved to 11-5-2 overall and 10-2-2 in league play will enter the conference tournament as the second seed.
A match tentatively scheduled for Monday afternoon at Murphy Field between the Grizzlies and California State-Los Angeles will not be played.
The Grizzlies' 3-0 margin of defeat is a three-goal improvement over their last meeting with the Skyhawks, a 6-0 loss on Sept. 24. Before that, ASC met up with Fort Lewis on Aug. 30, 2009, where they were turned away by a 9-1 tally.
The Grizzlies found themselves in 2-0 hole heading into the half, after being outshot 13-0 over the first 45 minutes of action.
Both of the Skyhawks' first half strikes came within the first 16 minutes. At five minutes and 37 seconds, Cory Dean put FLC on top, and at the 15:40 mark Keane Hamilton, who had assisted on Dean's goal, put one into the back of the net himself.
Freshman keeper Dillon Lee (Arvada, Colo.) made three saves in the first half, and added four more in the second stanza to finish the game with seven stops and cap off his season with 98, a new Adams State record, breaking the previous mark set in 2009 by one save. Lee's 98 saves also rank second in the RMAC this season.
Adams State finally managed some offense in the after intermission, as seniors Bruno Falcao (Joao Pessao, Brazil) and David Powers (Fairbanks , Alaska) each accounted for one shot in their final game as a Grizzly. However, ASC was unable to put a shot on goal in the match, and was outshot 28-2.
Fort Lewis tallied its finals score of the game at the 70:42 mark as Jordan Alexander, already with two assists on the day, upped his day's total to four points with his fifth goal of the season.
In addition to Falcao and Powers, senior Tyler Corbin (Mancos, Colo.) also saw his last action as a Grizzly on Sunday. Before Friday's home finale, Falcao, Powers, Corbin, Diego Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Beverly Hottor (Koforidua, Ghana) were all recognized in a pre-game presentation.
Adams State was unable to score in its final five games of the season, during which they faced Colorado Mines, currently ranked No. 4 in Division II twice, as well as ninth-ranked Regis and the defending national champions Fort Lewis. The Grizzlies last goal came in their 3-1 win, the first victory in program history, over Colorado Christian, on Oct. 15. But the Grizzlies did record 149 shots this season, 40 more than in 2009, and made 154 saves as a team, bettering last season's total by 48.
As a team, the Grizzlies end the season ranked second in the RMAC with 161 saves, and joining Lee in the top five in the RMAC in saves is fellow rookie keeper Paul Pizza (Alamosa, Colo.) who stopped 57 shots this season, the fifth-most in the conference.
