Covert, Veres Recognized at Lehigh Valley Basketball Media Luncheon

EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior Micah Covert and freshman Andrea Veres were named East Stroudsburg University’s “Unsung Heroes” at the first Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Media Organization luncheon of the 2010-11 season on Tuesday at Starter’s Restaurant in Bethlehem.

Covert (Chester/Chester) and Veres (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) were recognized for their contributions to the Warriors’ basketball programs through the first five games of the season, including last weekend’s Pocono Classic presented by State Farm at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Covert is averaging 9.2 points, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game and is tied for second on the team with just over 23 minutes per game off the bench for the Warriors’ men’s team, which is off to a 4-1 start. He has scored in double figures in three games and had a season-high 12 points in an 81-70 win vs. Felician in the Pocono Classic finale on Saturday night.

He was one of five players to play at least 20 minutes per game during last year’s PSAC Final Four and NCAA Division II Tournament run while playing in all 30 games and making one start. He posted 7.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists and shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from behind the arc. Covert’s three-point accuracy stands at 40.9 percent (9-for-22) so far this season.

Veres leads ESU’s women’s team in minutes, assists and steals and has started all five games at point guard. She is averaging 9.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals in 34 minutes per game, which included eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 42 minutes in an overtime loss at Clarion in her first collegiate game.

The freshman was a shooting guard in high school at Bethlehem Catholic, where she was second in school history with 1,238 points and second in Lehigh Valley Conference history with 158 career three-pointers. She also set school records with 52 three-pointers in a season and eight in a game. She has made six three-pointers through five games for the Warriors.

Both teams play home games this week, as the men face Lock Haven on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and the women take on Seton Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
