The University of Findlay men’s basketball team, ranked second in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II poll, struggled to put the ball in the hole on Tuesday evening but came away with a 66-57 win over the University of Illinois-Springfield in Croy Gymnasium. The victory gives the Oilers a 7-0 record on the year.
The Oilers shot only 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the floor, hitting 9-of-30 (30%) shots from behind the three point line. Luckily, the Prairie Stars weren’t much better as they hit 38.2 percent (21-of-55) of their attempts and only 19 percent (4-of-21) of their triple tries.
Findlay held a 40-37 advantage on the glass as they aided their cause with 15 offensive rebounds. They also forced 16 turnovers and hit 17-of-21 (81%) shots from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Nathan Hyde led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists. He hit 4-of-8 shots from three point range and drilled all six of his attempts from the free throw line.
Junior guard Kyle Caiola also reached double figures, scoring 15 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.
Freshman guard Sean Samsel came off the bench to contribute eight points while freshman forward Greg Kahlig added six points and four rebounds.
Michael Fakuade led Illinois-Springfield with 19 points, ten rebounds and six blocks.
The Oilers will be back in action again on Saturday when they travel to University Center, Michigan to take on Saginaw Valley State University. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest is scheduled to begin at 1 pm in the Ryder Center.
