Wingate places 10 on All-South Atlantic Conference teams Tuesday

Rock Hill, S.C.----The Wingate University football team places 10 players on the 2010 All-South Atlantic Conference teams announced this week. The Bulldogs had four first-team selections and six second-team picks. Wingate redshirt senior All-American Perry Floyd (Gastonia, N.C.) earned first team honors as a return specialist and second team laurels as a wide receiver.

            Wingate head coach Joe Reich was named the SAC Coach of the Year. Reich is the all-time winningest football coach in the school’s senior college history. He is 65-42 overall in 10 Wingate seasons. Reich and the Bulldogs (8-2 overall) won the SAC regular season championship and qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs for the first time in school history.
          
            Joining Floyd on the All-SAC first team defense is redshirt senior linebacker Greg Harmon (Hope Mills, N.C.). Wingate’s representatives on the All-SAC first team offense is redshirt senior running back Nelson Woods (Shelby, N.C.) and redshirt junior offensive lineman Mike Arndt (Matthews, N.C.).

            Bulldog redshirt senior cornerback Terrence Stephens (Warner Robins, Ga.) and redshirt sophomore safety Robert Fletcher (Lancaster, S.C.) represent Wingate on the All-SAC second team defense. The Bulldogs have four student-athletes on the All-SAC second team offense: Floyd (as a wide receiver), redshirt junior quarterback Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.), redshirt senior wide receiver Delric Ellington (Charlotte, N.C.) and redshirt senior place kicker RP Lopez (Lakeland, Fla.).

Perry Floyd
In 2009, Floyd was named to the NCAA Division II All-American second team (as a return specialist) by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. This year, Floyd is fourth in the NCAA with his 187.8 all-purpose yards per game. Floyd leads the SAC in punt returns (15.2 yards per return).

In his role as a receiver, Floyd is fourth in the SAC in receiving yards per game (97.8 yards per game). Floyd had 60 catches for 978 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had 11 catches for 171 yards in Wingate’s victory at West Georgia (Aug. 30). This year, Floyd set a Wingate single-season record with his 1878 all-purpose yards.

Greg Harmon

            Entering the NCAA play-offs, Harmon leads the Bulldogs with 85 tackles. He has six tackles for loss and one QB sack. Harmon and his defensive teammates have helped Wingate lead the SAC in turnover margin for the second year in a row. In 2010, Wingate gained 22 turnovers and lost 15 turnovers for a plus-seven margin. The Bulldogs led the nation in turnover margin last year with a plus-15.

            On Saturday, Harmon had six tackles and an interception as the Bulldogs defeated Newberry 49-33 to clinch their first-ever SAC regular season title. Harmon returned his interception 26 yards. He had two solo tackles, four assists and one tackles for loss Saturday. Harmon’s teammates elected him a captain for the 2010 season.

Nelson Woods

            Woods saved the best for last, as he had 26 carries for a season-high 181 yards and two scores in Wingate’s victory over Newberry Saturday. The previous week, Woods had 26 attempts for 173 yards and two touchdowns as Wingate topped Mars Hill College 48-29.

On the season, Woods has 223 carries for 1055 yards and nine touchdowns. Wingate’s all-time leading rusher, Woods has 3835 yards on 797 carries for his Bulldog career. He has 18 100-yard games during his illustrious Wingate tenure.

Mike Arndt

            Mike Arndt is a three-year starter on the Bulldog offensive line (right tackle). This year, the Bulldogs are second in the South Atlantic Conference in passing offense (317.2 yards per game) and total offense (436.4 yards per game). The Bulldog O-Line helped Nelson Woods rush for 1000 yards for the second time in his career.

In three years as a starter, Arndt has blocked for 15 100+ yard performances by Wingate running backs. Arndt has helped the Bulldog offense put up big numbers. In 2009, Wingate averaged 395.3 total offense yards per game in 2009. The Bulldogs were second in the SAC in scoring offense (33.6) and passing offense (241.1) last year.

Terrance Stephens

            Stephens and the Bulldog secondary are third in the South Atlantic Conference in pass efficiency defense with a 131.9 rating. On the season, Stephens has a team-best 50 solo tackles. He leads the Bulldogs in pass break-ups (eight) and shares the team top spot in forced fumbles (three). Stephens is third on the team in total tackles with 82. He had 12 tackles in the Mars Hill victory and 10 tackles on three separate occasions this year.

Robert Fletcher

            A team captain, Fletcher is second on the Bulldog charts with 83 tackles. He has a team-high three interceptions. Fletcher fills out his statistics ledger with two fumble recoveries and four tackles for loss. He had a season-high 11 tackles on two occasions, the most recent a 27-24 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University Oct. 30. Fletcher also had 11 stops at Valdosta State University on Sept. 4.

Cody Haffly

            Haffly is one of 24 candidates in the running for the 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II college football Player of the Year. For the 2010 season, Haffly is 225-of-358 for 3172 yards and 32 touchdowns. He has 300-plus passing yards in seven of his 10 games this season.

            Haffly has thrown five touchdown passes in a game four times this year, most recently in the Newberry victory Saturday. Haffly leads the SAC in passing efficiency (161.75); he is eighth in the nation in the same category. He averages 310.7 yards per game total offense, second on the SAC charts. Wingate is 15-5 overall in Haffly’s two years as a starter.

Delric Ellington

In 2010, Ellington has a team-best 65 catches for 875 yards. His yardage total is second on the Bulldog receiving list. Ellington has eight receiving touchdowns, placing him third on the team charts. Ellington is fifth in the SAC in receptions per game (6.50).

On Saturday, Ellington had 10 catches for 173 yards and three touchdowns (all season-highs) as the Bulldogs defeated Newberry. He also caught 10 passes at Valdosta State Sept. 4. Ellington had two TD catches each in victories over Carson-Newman College (35-33, Oct. 9) and Mars Hill (Nov. 6).

RP Lopez

            Lopez had two conference game-winning kicks this season, one against Lenoir-Rhyne and the other against Carson-Newman. On the 2010 season, Lopez hit eight-of-nine field goals and 41-for-41 extra points. His 41 extra points are a new school record for PATs in a season.

            On Oct. 16, Lopez kicked a career-high four field goals (32, 23, 29 and 27 yards) as the Bulldogs defeated Tusculum College 33-27 at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. On the same day, he set the school record for points in a single game by a kicker with 15.
