Valdez-Kent, King and Beck Selected All-Lone Star Conference

RICHARDSON, TEXAS — Senior setter Veronica Valdez-Kent (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team was selected Second Team All-Lone Star Conference, while Jessica King (Jr., MB, Las Cruces, N.M./Oñate HS) and Kristen Beck (Jr., OH, Odessa, Texas/ Odessa HS/ Midland) earned Honorable Mention All-LSC status for their contributions during the 2010 season.

The Zias more than doubled their win total from 2009, registering 13 victories and snapped a 46-game skid in conference play, finishing with four LSC wins. The total wins and conference wins were the most since the 2004 season, which culminated with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Eastern also finished with a 6-4 mark in home matches.

Valdez-Kent earned All-LSC status for the first time in her career, but was selected as the LSC Co-Setter of the Week in late September, for her performances against Texas Woman’s and Texas A&M-Commerce. For the season, she recorded 12 double doubles, including a 47-assist, 20-dig outing at 20th-ranked Abilene Christian. In the Zias win over Texas A&M-Commerce, which snapped ENMU’s LSC skid, she had 29 assists and 12 digs. Valdez-Kent finished third in the conference, with 9.9 assists per set.

King also garnered her first All-LSC selection, after leading the Zias with a .261 attack percentage and recording a career-high 81 digs. In an early-season win over Western State, King had 18 kills, 13 digs and two blocks. Against Texas A&M-Commerce, she registered 13 kills, a .400 attack percentage, a service ace and two blocks. For the season, King totaled 71 blocks and 21 service aces.

Beck picked up her first All-LSC selection, finishing ninth in the conference in kills and tenth in total points. Midway through the season, she had a six-match stretch, which saw her reach double digits in kills, including a season-high 18 against Oklahoma Panhandle. In two matches, Beck had four service aces, with one coming against Fort Hays State. For the season, she posted a .222 attack percentage with a team-high 29 service aces and 28 blocks.
