Schiechl advances to national ballot for Gene Upshaw Award

GOLDEN, Colo. (Nov. 23, 2010) – Colorado School of Mines’ Marc Schiechl has earned a spot on the national ballot for the eighth annual Gene Upshaw NCAA Division II Lineman of the Year Award, as announced today by the Super Regional Three coordinator.

Schiechl, a 6’3”, 260-lb. senior defensive lineman from Lakewood, Colo. (Bear Creek High School), garnered 14 of the 26 first-place votes – as well as six second-place votes – in the Super Regional Three voting.  Finalists from each of the four Super Regionals will advance to the national ballot.  Super Regional Three nominees for the Gene Upshaw Award received five points for first-place votes, four points for second-place votes, three points for third-place votes, two points for fourth-place votes and one point for a fifth-place vote.  Schiechl finished with 104 total points in the Super Regional Three voting process, the highest of any Super Regional Three nominee.

The 2010 Gene Upshaw Award winner will be announced in December (date is TBA) and will receive his award at the banquet for the Texas vs. The National All-Star Game on February 5th, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas.  This year’s Upshaw Award winner is assured of a spot on one of the rosters for the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game, as well as the East/West Shrine Game on January 22nd, 2011, in Orlando, Fla.

Super Regional Three is comprised of football-playing institutions from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).  The Gene Upshaw Award is sponsored by the Manheim (Pa.) Touchdown Club.

A First Team All-RMAC pick (lone unanimous selection on defense) in 2010, Schiechl was also named RMAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  Schiechl became the all-time NCAA Division II career leader in sacks (45.0) during the 2010 season and concluded his career at CSM tied for fourth in the NCAA Division II record book in career tackles for a loss (69.5).  Schiechl led the RMAC and is currently ranked fifth in the nation in sacks (11.0).  The RMAC leader in tackles for a loss this season (18.0), Schiechl finished atop the RMAC and is currently ranked third in the nation in forced fumbles (tied – five).  Schiechl, who is currently ranked fourth in the nation in forced fumbles per game (0.42), concluded the 2010 campaign with 65 total tackles (33 solo), five quarterback hurries and two blocked kicks.

Prior to the start of the 2010 season, Schiechl garnered Pre-Season All-RMAC and Pre-Season RMAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year recognition.  Schiechl, who earned Second Team Pre-Season All-American accolades from D2football.com and D2proday.com, earned First Team Pre-Season All-American by Consensus Draft Services (CDS) this year.  Schiechl earned All-American honors from the AFCA, as well as Don Hansen’s Football Gazette (Third Team) and D2football.com (Honorable Mention), following his junior year in 2009.

Colorado School of Mines (9-3 overall, 8-1 RMAC) qualified for the NCAA Division II football championships for the second time in program history in 2010.  The Orediggers, who had 18 players named to the All-RMAC Football Teams, were 2010 RMAC Co-Champions.  CSM was ranked as high as #16 in the AFCA and D2football.com top 25 polls this season.
