New Haven Men’s Basketball Drops Northeast-10 Conference Opener to American International

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshmen Justin Exum and Krystian Foriest each registered 14 points on Wednesday evening, but the University of New Haven men’s basketball team was defeated by American International College, 78-62, at Charger Gymnasium in its 2010-11 Northeast-10 Conference opener. With the loss, New Haven dropped to 1-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten, improving to 2-0.

The opening minutes of the game featured a quick start from the home team. Eight minutes into the contest, Justin Exum capped off 6-0 run with a three-pointer, granting the Chargers an 11-9 advantage. However after an AIC timeout, the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a 33-17 run to close out the first half. The two teams went into the locker rooms with a score of 42-28 in favor of the visiting Yellow Jackets.

After the intermission, the Yellow Jackets offense picked up right where they left off in the first frame. AIC opened the half with a 10-0 run, increasing its lead to 22 points with 15 minutes left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets maintained their double-digit lead throughout the game, leaving their first Northeast-10 Conference match-up with a 78-62 victory.

For the second consecutive game, Exum led the way offensively for the Chargers with 14 points on 3-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Senior Robert Jamerson recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Foriest poured in 14 points. Jeremy Williams added nine points and three steals in the losing effort.

AIC’s Allen Aragbaye led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 5-of-7 from downtown. Isiah Wallace and Ricky Hudson each chimed in with 18 and 13 points, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets connected on 56 percent (31-of-55) of their field goals, including 10-of-16 from outside of the three-point line. The Chargers were held to 37 percent from the floor and just 22 percent (5-of-22) from long distance.

New Haven did shoot well from the charity stripe, hitting 13 of its 15 attempts for an average of 87 percent.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, November 20 with a non-conference affair at Caldwell College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
