Griffon Women Rebound with an 87-54 Victory Over Upper Iowa

QUINCY, Ill. – Five players scored in double figures as the Missouri Western women improved to 1-1 with a 87-54 victory over Upper Iowa at the Qunicy/Subway Tipoff Tournament. Lauren Nolke got the scoring started for the Griffons with the first of her five 3-pointers.

After a free-throw put Upper Iowa up 12-11, Western went on a 10-2 run capped off by Kallie Schoonover’s jumper with 10:50 to go in the first half. Deiters’ layup with 8:00 to go brought the Peacocks within four, 19-23, but another Nolke three with just under seven minutes to go in the half put the Griffons up by 10. Dieters led the Peacocks with 17 points. Nolke led all scorers with 19 points.

With one minute remaining in the first-half, Schoonover drained a three, bringing Western’s lead to 12. Two free-throws by Jeri Jacobson left the halftime score 30-40.

Lana Otting led off the second half with a three for the Peacocks. Jessica Koch answered with a jumper that started a 13-2 run for Western. Koch would finish with 15 points. Brenna Saline’s jumper to end the
run put the Lady Griffons up 35-51. Saline finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds on 4-4 shooting from the field.

After the early run, the Lady Griffons never looked back, outscoring the Peacock’s 47-24 in the second-half. Western finished shooting 75 percent from the free-throw line and 48 percent from the field. Rachel
Luteyn finished with 17 points, and Schoonover pitched in 10. The Griffons were active on the boards, out rebounding the Peacock’s
50-35.

The Griffons will face Rockhurst Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in their first home game of the season. Missouri Western State University (located in St. Joseph, Mo.) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
