Gannon was picked to finish third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division preseason coaches poll. The Lady Knights return six letterwinners, but will need to replace all five starters from last year’s record-setting squad. Gannon finished the 2009-10 season 37-1, setting new NCAA Division II marks for most victories (37) in a season and consecutive wins (37) in a single season. The Lady Knights advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the first time in school history, before being eliminated with a 97-94 overtime loss to eventual champion Emporia State.
Under the direction of head coach Cleve Wright, the Lady Knights are 63-6 over the past two seasons, for an astonishing .913 winning percentage. Gannon was ranked No. 1 in the last three USA Today ESPN regular-season Top 25 polls, joining the women’s lacrosse program (2000 and 2001) as the only two programs in school history to reach the apex of the national rankings.
Dayton return four starters and 14 letterwinners from last season’s squad that finished 25-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Flyers reached as high as No. 20 in the USA Today ESPN Top 25 poll last season thanks to a win over then No. 10 Michigan State.
Head coach Jim Jabir’s squad was picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 conference this season. Jabir was a finalist for the 2009-10 Kay Yow National Coach of the Year.
Gannon will face another Division I opponent on Sunday, November 7 when they will take on Penn State at 12 noon. The Lady Knights open the 2010-11 regular season at the Ferris State Tournament on Saturday, November 20 and Sunday November 21, taking on Northwood and Ferris State.
