Gannon Football Team drops to 10th in ECAC Meadowlands Poll

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon football team dropped two spots and is ranked 10th in the latest Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lambert Meadowlands Division II Football Poll released Monday afternoon.

Bloomsburg is the top-ranked team for the second consecutive week with an 8-1 record. Kutztown (9-0), California (Pa.) (8-1), New Haven (8-1) and Mercyhurst (6-2) completed the top five.

Slippery Rock (6-3), Edinboro (6-3), Assumption (6-3), C.W. Post (5-4) and Gannon (5-4) rounded out the top 10.

Gannon saw its two-game win streak snapped with an 11-10 setback to Clarion last Saturday. The Golden Eagles scored the winning touchdown with 4:39 left in regulation. Head coach Jim Kiernan’s squad still need one more victory to guarantee back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1995.

Two record-setting plays occurred during Saturday’s game. Junior cornerback Chris Cook (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown, setting a new school record for longest interception return. Senior placekicker Jeremy Ditzler (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) tied a school record with a career-long 50-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Gannon returns to action Saturday, November 6 at Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the Internet at http://www.wergfm.com. Established in 1936 as the Lambert Trophy to recognize supremacy in Eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best team in the East in the Bowl Subdivision. In 1957, the Lambert Cup was created to recognize non-Division I-A teams, and in 1966 a Division III award was added. In 1983, the Lambert family decided the Meadowlands Sports Complex would be the best organization with a sincere and involved interest in college athletics to sponsor and manage the award, and since that time, the awards have been known as the Lambert Meadowlands Awards.

To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Award, a school must be located in the East or play at least half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania, while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if at least half of their schedule features eligible teams. Teams in Eastern-based football conferences, regardless of location, qualify if at least half their schedule is against Lambert eligible teams.
