Big Second Half Powers Caldwell Over New Haven Men's Basketball

CALDWELL, N.J. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 88-70 Saturday afternoon to Caldwell College in a non-conference contest in New Jersey. The Cougars scored 58 second-half points to surge past the Chargers in the 18-point victory. With the loss the Chargers fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 2-2.

Caldwell opened the game by connecting on a long-range shot which gave them a three-point lead right out of the gate. The Chargers answered over the next 10 minutes as they opened a lead on the Cougars. Sophomore guard Mike Stys scored 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers to help New Haven to a nine-point, 22-13, lead with 11:10 left in the first half. The Cougars did not trail for long, rattling off 17 unanswered points and taking an eight-point, 30-22, lead with just under six minutes left in the half. The Chargers would then go on a 9-0 run, taking the lead off a Stys lay-up inside the three-minute mark. The team exchanged point and the Cougars led 34-32 at the break.

Stys scored 14 first half points, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the floor. Jeremy Williams added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Caldwell out-rebounded New Haven 21-15 in the first half, while the Chargers led by eight percentage points in shooting.

Williams connected on a three-pointer to open the second half an regain the lead for the Chargers. The teams exchanged points against before Caldwell took the lead for good. The Cougars then scored 13 unanswered points to take a commanding 15-point lead. Each of New Haven's attempts to mount comebacks were stopped as Caldwell opened a 22-point lead down the stretch. Williams once again connected from downtown in the last minute to bring the score to 88-70.

Williams led the team with 21-points and six rebounds in the game. Stys finished with 16 points, while Robert Jamerson added 19 points and nine boards.

The Chargers finished the game shooting 41.4 percent from the floor, while the Cougars shot 75 percent in the second half, improving to 56.6 percent in the game.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Assumption College. The Northeast-10 Conference game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
