The Lady Pirates (1-0) turned in a fine defensive effort, limiting the Valkyries (0-1) to just 20 percent shooting from the floor while also forcing 19 turnovers on the night. Armstrong jumped out to a 32-16 halftime lead and held on for the win, improving head coach Matt Schmidt's record in season openers to 2-1 while at the helm of the Lady Pirates.
Walker hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor en route to her team-high 19 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Freshman Mauri Wells collected a double-double in her first collegiate game, scoring 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line, while also collecting 11 rebounds.
Converse was led by Katy Vaughn, who notched a game-high 19 points, and Jasmine Simmons, who had eight.
The Lady Pirates return home on Monday, November 15, to open up their home season with a 5:30 p.m. non-conference contest against Allen University.
