Wingate outlasts Carson-Newman 62-53 Monday night

Jefferson City, Tenn.----Four different players scored in double figures as Wingate University Bulldogs defeated Carson-Newman College 62-53 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Monday night in Holt Fieldhouse. Wingate improves to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the SAC.
          
Sophomore guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists to lead the Wingate attack, knocking down five-of-seven shots from the field. Sophomore guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had 12 points for the Bulldogs. Sophomore forward Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior guard Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) pulled down 12 rebounds for the visiting ‘Dogs.

The Eagles got 37 of their 53 points from two players. Junior guard Antonio Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) had a game-high 20 points. Junior guard Bradley Tumer (Mt. Dora, Fla.) added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Eagles, while senior center Brandon Evans (Salem, Va.) collected six rebounds and six blocked shots.

A three from Sullivan gave the Eagles an early 10-4 lead. Wingate answered with a 12-0 run to take a 16-10 advantage. Matilus had four points in the spurt, while back-to-back jumpers from Kincaid gave the ‘Dogs the lead. Turner capped the spurt with a lay-up at the 8:58 mark.

Carson-Newman used a 5-0 run to take a 25-23 lead with five minutes remaining in the half, capped by a lay-up from Sullivan. A Matilus three, followed by a dunk from redshirt freshman forward Mike Tankersley (Hampton, Ga.), put the ‘Dogs on top by three with four minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles took a 31-30 lead on a jumper from senior guard Erwin Staten (Huntsville, Ala.) at the 1:55 mark. The Bulldogs took a 34-31 lead into intermission thanks to a triple from Matilus 29 seconds before halftime.

A three from Sullivan gave the Eagles a two-point advantage four minutes into the second half. A Kincaid lay-up, followed by a pair of jumpers from Alexander, put Wingate on top 46-42 at the 9:16 mark. Evans cut the lead to two with nine minutes remaining, but the ‘Dogs got threes from Turner and Vaughn on consecutive trips to take an eight-point lead at the 6:26 mark.

Tumer answered with a lay-up and a pair of trifectas to trim Wingate’s lead to two with 2:47 remaining. A Matilus lay-up gave the Bulldogs a 56-52 lead with more than a minute to go. The Eagles got a free throw to cut the lead to three one final time, but Wingate took care of business at the free throw line, knocking down all six attempts in the final 42 seconds to hold on for the victory.
          
The Bulldogs shot 40 percent from the field, while hitting five-of-10 shots from three-point range (50 percent). The Eagles shot only 32.8 percent on the night, while knocking down four-of-16 shots from beyond the arc (25 percent). Wingate converted 15 Carson-Newman turnovers into 18 points, while the Bulldog bench outscored the Eagle bench 20-7. Wingate also held a 39-35 rebounding edge. The Bulldogs racked up 12 steals on the night, led by junior guard Chase Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md.) with five.

Wingate takes a break for final examinations Dec. 8-14. The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, Dec. 14, traveling to Mount Olive College for a 7 p.m. start. Carson-Newman travels to Lees-McRae College Saturday at 2 p.m.
