UT Takes SSC Opener Over Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The defending Sunshine State Conference champions defended its women's basketball crown as The University of Tampa (4-2, 1-0 SSC) picked up a 71-57 victory over Barry University (3-3, 0-1 SSC) on Saturday.

After the Buccaneers opened the game with a 3-pointer, UT wasted no time as it went on a 12-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 14:03 to play until the half. Barry battled back to take a brief 21-19 advantage before the Spartans answered with an 11-0 run. UT held its lead, taking a 30-26 margin to halftime.

In the second half, Tampa held the lead for the entire period as it led by as many as 17 points en route to its first league victory over the 2010-11 season.

Gianna Messina led head coach Tom Jessee's squad with a team-high 21 points while burying six from beyond the arc. Messina also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the young season.

Taja Green also added 20 points, going 7-for-13 from the field for Tampa. Lindsey Watson contributed 16 points as Catriana Messina started and registered a team-leading six assists.

UT's defense held the Bucs to a 37.5 field goal clip as the Spartans came in at 55.1 percent. Tampa also won the battle of the boards 35-23.
