Simmons Tabbed LSC South Divison Offensive Player of the Week

RICHARDSON, Texas – West Texas A&M’s Jamie Simmons has been named the Lone Star Conference South Division’s Offensive Player of the Week, according to a release from the league office on Wednesday.

This is Simmons’ second weekly honor of the 2010-11 season and fifth overall. The junior forward was named offensive player of the week once and defensive player of the week twice last season.

Since losing teammate Joni Unruh to a season-ending injury, Simmons has stepped up her game and has proven that she can be a new leader on this team. Simmons averaged 22.5 points a game last week while leading the No. 22 Lady Buffs to a pair of victories over LSC North Division opponents. The Houston, Texas, native tallied 22 points in an 80-45 win over Texas Woman’s last Thursday, then followed it up with a 23-point effort against Texas A&M-Commerce in WT’s 79-71 victory over the Lions. Simmons, who currently ranks third in the nation in field goal percentage, shot 60% from the field this past week, tallied 17 rebounds (8.5/game) and had two blocks as well.

Simmons and the rest of the Lady Buffs return to action this weekend with a pair of LSC crossover games. WT will host Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. and will then face No. 7 Northeastern State on Monday, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.
