Men's basketball heads to Olivet Nazarene, women's basketball takes on St. Francis (Ill.) and track and field opens the indoor season at Grand Valley State; highlighting the week in Lewis Athletics.
Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team (6-5, 1-1 GLVC) won a pair of non-conference home contests last week, defeating IU-Northwest, 88-77 on Tuesday (Dec. 7) night and St. Francis (Ill.), 82-61 on Saturday (Dec. 11) evening. In the victory over IU-Northwest, Jerome Robinson and Marty Strus combined for 31 points on 14-of-15 shooting and 12 rebounds (9 offensive). Senior guard Dennis Thomas, Jr. led all Flyers with 23 points while junior Chris McClellan had 13 points and recorded three trifectas for the third-straight game. In the win over St. Francis (Ill.), Thomas, Jr. led all scorers with 19 points, six assists and no turnovers. Robinson, Strus and McClellan each had 10 points for the Flyers. Lewis turned the ball over just three times, which is the fewest since a two-turnover outing against Bellarmine on Jan. 22, 2004. Lewis heads to Bourbonnais, Ill. this Saturday (Dec. 18) to take on Olivet Nazarene for a 2 PM tip-off.
Women's Basketball: The women's basketball team (5-4, 2-0 GLVC) fell just short of an upset of No. 9 Grand Valley State on Saturday (Dec. 11) evening, falling 77-62 in their lone contest of the week. Senior Jenny Turpel finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Turpel's two blocks moved her into fourth all-time at Lewis with 95. Senior Kelly Monaco hit five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. The Flyers return to action on Sunday (Dec. 19) as they take on St. Francis (Ill.) at 2 PM.
